History of the Estate

It was in the year 1843 - well before the invention of the telephone, the first war of Indian independence, or even the first cricket and football matches ever played - that the British company ‘James Finlay & Co.’ first established the Goombira Tea Estate.

The company ran the Goombira Tea Estate for a good 111 years (starting the tea plantation in 1854 and getting it registered in 1902) well into the newly independent India. In 1954, the estate was sold in an auction and purchased by Nandaram Agarwal in the name of Goombira Tea Co. Pvt Ltd. and he, along with three of his sons (Jabarmal, R. V., and Khagesh Agarwal) who ran it for about three decades till 1984. For the next quarter-century, it was held by Mr RP Singhania and Mr Rangarajan, from whom we purchased the plantation in 2009.

The estate is currently run by the Goombira Tea Company Pvt. Ltd. which is run by Ms. Snigdha Chamaria and her father Mr. Kamakhya Chamaria who serve as directors of the company.

Since its launch, the Goombira Tea Company systematically replanted new teas across the Goombira estate in Barak Valley as the plantation was in ruins. The estate now produces some of the finest and freshest teas. The beauty of a tea made from a leaf with two and a half buds, freshly curled, twisted and curled is something else.

Our tea-growing tradition and pedigree is over 176 years old & continues to grow richer and stronger with every passing day.
